Version 1.4 Is Here: Smarter AI, Better History, and a Bug That Was Costing You Scans

1/ The AI Got Smarter. Like, Noticeably Smarter.

AI-powered storage unit analysis is only as good as what the AI can actually see. And let's be real — storage unit photos are taken in conditions that would make a professional photographer cry. Dark corners, weird angles, piles stacked to the ceiling. It's not exactly a studio photoshoot.

That's why the biggest changes in 1.4 happen before the AI even looks at your photos.

Auto-enhanced photos. The extension now runs automatic contrast and sharpening adjustments on your screenshot before it hits the AI. Think of it like giving the AI a pair of glasses. If you've been getting vague valuations on dark or blurry shots, this one's for you. You should notice a real difference on your next scan.

Confidence ratings on every item. The AI now tags each identified item as High, Medium, or Low confidence. No more guessing which parts of the valuation you can trust and which ones are the AI just winging it. Items are also ranked by estimated value — the heavy hitters rise to the top of your results instead of getting buried under a pile of old magazines and mystery boxes.

Photo quality checks. Here's one we're proud of: the AI now tells you straight up when your photo is too blurry or too dark to produce a reliable estimate. Instead of giving you a confident-sounding number based on nothing (we've all been there), you'll see a clear note that the image quality affected the analysis. Transparency matters when you're about to throw money at a storage unit auction.

2/ Real Barcode Scanning. No More AI Hallucinations.

This one deserves its own section because it was a problem.

The previous version tried to read UPC barcodes by having the AI interpret them visually from your photos. Here's the issue: AI models are not barcode scanners. They were sometimes generating numbers that looked plausible but were completely made up. That's a real problem when your item valuation depends on matching the right product.

Version 1.4 uses Chrome's built-in barcode scanning API to read UPC codes from your captured images before they go anywhere near the AI. Verified codes get passed directly into the analysis. Unreadable codes? Ignored entirely — the AI no longer guesses.

Translation: More accurate item identification on products with visible barcodes. Zero hallucinated numbers inflating your estimates.

3/ Fixed: The API Key Bug That Was Blocking Your Scans

Several of you hit us up about this one, and honestly, we get it — it was maddening.

Here's what was happening: You'd click "Test Connection," get a nice green success message, feel great about yourself... and then the extension would still show "not configured" and refuse to scan. The fix? You had to click Save separately. Something the interface never told you. Classic.

In v1.4, testing your API key now automatically saves it. One step, not two. Done.

We also squashed a second bug: even when the key was saved correctly, the connection test was failing with an "invalid API key" error. The key simply wasn't being loaded properly during the test. Both bugs are resolved.

4/ Scan History That Actually Tells You Something

The scan history panel used to show generic "Item" labels that told you approximately nothing at a glance. Scrolling through your history was like reading a grocery list that just says "food" over and over.

Version 1.4 updates each history entry to show the actual product names found, an estimated value range, condition, quantity, and the AI confidence level. You can now scroll back through your scans and actually understand what each one found without reopening it.

Small change. Big difference when you're comparing units at an auction.

5/ The Tooltip That Wouldn't Leave

You know the "Draw a box around the treasure" instruction tooltip? The one that appeared right on top of where you were trying to draw your selection box?

Yeah. That was annoying. It now fades out after 3 seconds and stays out of your way. You're welcome.
